The trailer for Alex Gardland’s upcoming A24 film Civil War delivers a strong cautionary message about a divided and war-torn America.
Summary

Now that the first trailer for Alex Garland’s new movie Civil War is out, there are a few important things that need to be figured out. Garland’s bold and possibly controversial warning film is backed by the well-known independent production company A24. It looks like this will be A24’s first big hit. Although the estimated budget for Civil War is only $75 million, which is still less than most Hollywood studio blockbusters, it will be a big step for A24 into the competitive world of widely distributed commercial content.
Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman as a tyrannical US President. It looks like a bold look at a very extreme but possibly realistic version of an American dystopia in which 19 states leave the country. The Western Forces, which are led by the strange union of Texas and California, have become more military and fly a new American flag with two stars instead of fifty. The trailer for The Civil War shows a Florida Alliance and a few different U.S. groups. The trailer also talks about Washington, Montana, Georgia, Louisiana, and Minnesota as states that left the Union.
Is US Fighting Itself In Civil War?

As of this writing, the first video for Alex Garland’s Civil War, which came out on December 13, 2023, is the only source of information about the story. The movie’s explanation for Texas and California’s strange union supports the idea that the war isn’t really about Democrats vs. Republicans, but about Offerman’s dishonest three terms as President. There is evidence that the US federal government has broken its promise to uphold the US Constitution and is now under the control of Offerman’s tyrannical President.

For a state to officially leave the U.S., 34 other states would have to agree with it. This means that California and Texas probably left the U.S. without permission during Garland’s Civil War. It looks like the Western Forces are fighting against the rise of a totalitarian government under Offerman’s presidency, not because they have different political views. It’s also possible that the Western Forces are working together to fight over a water shortage. The war could also be about business, taxes, or the tech industry. Google, Amazon, and Tesla are just a few of the big tech companies in the U.S. Most of them are in states that have “fake” seceded, like California, Texas, and Washington.

The Civil War movie from A24 shows how the United States is split.

At 0:40 seconds into the Civil War clip, a backwards map shows that the whole East Coast is still part of the United States. Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico are the westernmost states that don’t seem to have seceded. Since these are three of the driest states in the U.S., it’s likely not a water problem that’s causing the war. From the trailer for The Civil War, it looks like South Carolina is the southernmost state that has not done well. The states of Alaska and Hawaii are also either neutral or still part of the United States.
In the Civil War trailer, the biggest question is how the Western forces have been able to become so militarized that they have military-grade planes, Humvees, guns, and supplies. Another question is which side is fighting for the right reasons. In the Civil War video (see image above), there is a military camp that looks like it belongs to the US Army but actually flies the two-star Western Forces flag. This makes me wonder who is giving the Western Forces such high-tech gear, which could be a third party or a force that is privately funded. New York City is bombed from above in the trailer, which shows that the U.S. military is fighting for the President.
On what side do the main characters in The Civil War stand?

Photographers, played by Dunst and Moura, are the main players in Civil War. They are probably trying to record the events as accurately as possible. According to the video, journalists were being killed in Washington, D.C. This could mean that Dunst and Moura join the resistance or at least feel more at ease with the Western Forces. It looks like Offerman’s President is a Nazi ruler who wants to set up a totalitarian government. He seems ready to make his own country less stable in order to impose an anti-American nationalism in Alex Garland’s Civil War.
