Sony’s Spider-Man Spin-Off Franchise: A Lesson in Failure

While their own cinematic universe is under fire, Sony is rejoicing at the return of all eight live-action Spider-Man flicks to theaters. Over the past few years, the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC) has suffered a number of critical and commercial setbacks. Madame Web, the most recent in this series, premiered to mixed reviews from reviewers and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 13% approval rating. The film’s stars, Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, have also spoken out against it; Sweeney, in her Saturday Night Live cold open, made fun of Madame Web.

According to reports, the studio is displeased with Dakota Johnson in particular as a result of this public criticism. According to a source, “lots of people at Sony are questioning her star power, and how she reacted to this failure will likely come back to haunt her.” This suggests that Sony may have warned Johnson about her statements. Even terrible movies get a lot of work, so having your celebrity s**t on it is embarrassing, according to the source. “Not every movie is going to work.”

Beginning on April 15, all eight of the live-action Spider-Man films will be re-released.
